Armed police swoop on street after gunman opens fire

Armed police swooped on a Liverpool street after a gunman opened fire.

Witnesses said they heard shots ring out after the man shot at a house in Jermyn Street, Toxteth .

Appalled detectives say it is "luck alone" that nobody was seriously hurt in the "reckless" shooting around 9.25pm on Thursday.

A police cordon placed at either end of Jermyn Street last night was still visible on Friday afternoon as a forensics team descended on the street to hunt for clues.

Last night armed police attended the scene and police confirmed damage was caused to a house as people in the area reported seeing Matrix officers and scientific support at the scene.

The road was blocked from its junctions with Granby Street and Kingsley Road for most of the night and into the early hours of the morning.

Pictures taken at the scene showed police officers coming and going from Jermyn Street at forensic officers carried out their investigation with the help of a portable lamp.

Initial enquiries are being carried out in the area, including house-to-house, forensics and CCTV and Merseyside Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Condemning the gunman, Chief Inspector George Phillips said: "To fire towards a house is incredibly reckless and it’s through luck alone that nobody has been seriously hurt.

“People in the community may have seen or heard the incident, or recorded something on CCTV or dashcam."

Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC or 101 with reference 901, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A police cordon also remained Bootle after a gunman opened fire on a busy road close to Mons pub and its customers.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Southport Road and Breeze Hill, in Bootle , shortly after 9pm to reports of gunshots.

Armed police at the scene say they found evidence that a gun had been fired close to the Mons pub before a cordon was put in place.

Several police cars and a cordon remained as of 2pm on Froday.
