Armed police swoop on Edinburgh park after reports of man brandishing gun

A man has been charged after armed police descended on a Capital park following reports of a local brandishing a gun.

Officers raided the tiny Nicolson Square on Sunday afternoon after concerned passers-by raised the alarm over a man in possession of a firearm, however discovered no evidence of a gun being present.

A 26-year-old man has now been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear in court at a later date.

A Police Scotland spokesman said that there was no danger to the general public during the operation, adding that no dangerous weapons had been found.

He said: “We were called around 12.30pm on Sunday, 18 July, to a report of a man with what appeared to be a firearm in Nicolson Square, Edinburgh.

"Officers, supported by specialist firearms officers, attended. No dangerous weapon was found and there was no threat to the general public.

“A 26-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.”
