Armed police swoop after 'man with a knife' outside Pontardawe pub

Armed police swooped on a south Wales pub in the middle of the night after a man allegedly threatened people with a knife.

The unnamed man was arrested outside a pub on Herbert Street, in Pontardawe and spent the rest of the night in police custody.

People in Pontardawe were woken up in the early hours of Friday, June 28, by the sound of the police helicopter which was called to assist officers on the ground.

A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed it had been called to the pub just after midnight.

He said: "We received reports at 12.30am of a man outside a pub in Herbert Street, Pontardawe threatening people with a knife.

"Armed officers and the helicopter were deployed in support of local officers.

"A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody."

Residents said they were woken by "intense police helicopter activity" during the night. There was also a heavy police presence in the town, with police cars stationed in some of the nearby streets, including Rhyd-y-Fro and Gelligron, residents said.
