Armed police swarm Leeds street in suspected 'hostage situation' yards from primary school

Armed police descended on a street in south Leeds last night after reports that a man was holding people hostage with a gun.

West Yorkshire Police received a call at around 9:30pm last night to say that a man was making threats while holding a firearm at a house on Bodmin Place in Middleton.

Armed officers arrived within minutes, with a local resident telling LeedsLive that she saw up to eight officers 'all pointing their guns at a house'.

The witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "Last night [at] approx 9:30pm armed police were called to suspected hostage situation.

"Police were told a man had his pregnant girlfriend and two babies hostage at gun point. Four armoured police cars, two marked cars and a police van were on the scene.

"When we looked out, eight officers were stood behind one of the unmarked cars all pointing their guns at a house.

"[It was] traumatic to all on the street to look out at police pointing gun at their houses."

Thankfully, the incident was soon established as a hoax, with police continuing their investigations to identify the person responsible for what the force has labelled 'malicious communication'.
