Armed police surround Weston-super-Mare pier after reports of men with gun

Armed police were called to Weston-super-Mare’s Birnbeck Pier - after reports of men with a gun.

Officers were called to the crumbling pier at around 10.30am on Sunday (April 18) after reports of a group of individuals in possession of a firearm.

Coastguards were also called to the scene to help police access the pier.

Local people reported seeing a large police presence in the area during the morning.

Two men in their 20s and a teenage boy were arrested for firearms offences.

An air rifle was recovered at the scene.

High visibility police patrols were also dispatched to the area to offer reassurance to the community.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “Armed officers were deployed to Birnbeck Pier, Weston-super-Mare at about 10.30am on Sunday 18 April following a report about a group of individuals believed to be in possession of a firearm.

“The coastguard assisted officers in accessing the pier.

“Two men in their 20s and a teenage boy were arrested for firearms offences and an air rifle was recovered.

“They have since been released and the matter has been dealt with via a community resolution.

“High visibility patrols have been stepped up in the local area for community reassurance.”

It is understood that the firearm was legally owned by someone of an appropriate age and there was no intent to cause harm or alarm.

The individuals were asked to write a letter to the authorities involved apologising for their actions.
