Armed police surround home for four hours after man sets fire to house

Armed police surrounded a house after a man set fire to the home.

Emergency services were called to Oxford Road in Huyton , shortly before 5.30pm, after reports of concern for the safety of a man in a house.

When officers arrived they surrounded the house in order to bring the man out safely.

People in the area reported seeing 10 police cars, armed officers, fire crews and multiple paramedics at the scene for over four hours.

At around 8pm neighbours said a man was brought out of the house and put into the back of a police car.

Merseyside Police later confirmed that a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a range of offences including arson and criminal damage.

A spokesperson for the force told the ECHO : "We have arrested a man following an incident in Huyton this afternoon, Wednesday, 18 December.

"Officers were called to an address in Oxford Road at around 5.25pm following reports of concern for a man at the property.

Paramedics were also called to the scene (LIVERPOOL ECHO)

"Emergency services attended and an armed containment was put in place.

"A 35-year-old man from Huyton has been arrested on suspicion of affray, public order, arson and criminal damage and has been taken to a police station for questioning.

"No one else was in the property and there are no reports of any injuries."

Pictures taken at the scene show multiple police cars, an ambulance and two fire engines parked outside a row of homes.

According to police, enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and a scene remains in place.

Officers have thanked those living close to the scene for their patience.
