Armed police surrounded a car and arrested two men after "disorder" in a prison visitor area.
The swoop was spotted by witnesses shortly before 5pm on Friday night, on Long Lane in Walton, after the incident at HMP Altcourse in Fazakerley.
It is unclear what the nature of the incident at the privately run prison was but there are no reports of any assaults or injuries.

A statement from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm a car was stopped on Long Lane in Liverpool by officers on Friday, January 7, following an earlier incident in which a number of males had attended at HMP Altcourse and acted in a disorderly manner in the prison’s external visitors area.
"Two men – aged 21 and 27 – were later arrested on suspicion of s5 public order offences and dealt with by way of community resolution."
