Armed police storm Oxford Street M&S store in London over reports of man with knife

A major store on one of London's busiest shopping streets was evacuated on Thursday over reports of a knifeman on the loose.

Police said that people had been told to leave a shop - thought to be Marks & Spencer - at around 3:15pm.

Pictures showed at least five emergency service vehicles parked outside on the pavement.

An update from the Metropolitan Police around an hour later, at 4:10pm, said the shop was reopening.

No arrests have been made and no injuries reported, a statement said.

The force said initially: "We are aware of reports of an incident at a shop in Oxford Street, W1.

"Police were called following reports of a man with a knife. Officers are in attendance.

"The shop has been evacuated as a precaution. No suspect or victim found at this time. Enquiries ongoing."

One onlooker said on Twitter: "Armed police just stormed M&S as I walked by on Oxford Street.

"Apparently a man armed with a knife on the loose…"

A later comment from Scotland Yard confirmed M&S was being opened once again after the armed police incident.

It said: "Police are now leaving the shop in Oxford Street, which is reopening.

"There are no reported injuries and no arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances."

The Mirror has approached Marks & Spencer for comment on the incident.
