Armed police sent to Somerset hunt after reports of saboteur with a gun

Armed police were called to "reports of a person with a handgun" in the Somerset countryside last week.

Officers were called in and searched a vehicle after reports a hunt saboteur had a gun. No firearms were found and the police believe the call to be malicious.

Somerset Live reports six units of armed officers were deployed to Chilcote Lane, near Wells, on the day of a Mendip Farmers Hunt event after it was reported to the police that a member of the Mendip Hunt Sabs group had a handgun.

A spokesman for the Mendip Hunt Sabs said the claims of a gun were "false" and "ludicrous".

The Mendip Farmers Hunt has declined to comment on the incident.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary has issued a statement on the incident.

They said: "We were called at about 3.45pm on Wednesday (February 26) to reports of a person with handgun in Chilcote Lane, Wells.

"He got in a vehicle which was later stopped by police.

"A search was carried out but no firearm located. It is believed this was a malicious call."

The police also confirmed investigations are being carried out into three further reported offences on the day.

They said: "These are an allegation of criminal damage to a vehicle belonging to a hunt saboteur; a report of the harassment of a hunt employee by saboteurs and an offence under the Protection of Badgers Act.

"These enquiries continue and officers are awaiting the submission of dashcam and other footage by the informants.

"We have no evidence which would lead to a prosecution for an offence under Hunting Act.
