A heavy police presence descended on Aberystwyth on Thursday evening as officers dealt with an "incident".
Officers arrived at the scene on Alexandra Road in the town centre and closed off the road at around 8pm.
They asked members of the public to avoid the whole area as they dealt with the situation but did not confirm the nature of the incident. Eye-witnesses said that armed police were in attendance and a police dog.
Members of the public were seen standing outside a local pub on the street but the incident had nothing to with the bar.
A Dyfed-Powys Police statement released at around 8pm on Thursday said: "We are at scene of an incident near Alexandra Road, Aberystwyth. We are asking members of the public to avoid the area whilst we deal with the incident. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time.
The exact nature of the incident has not been confirmed and it is unknown at this stage if anyone was arrested at the scene.
Shortly after 9pm the fore confirmed that the incident had "concluded" and that the road was now clear.
