Armed police scrambled and manhunt launched after reports of gunfire in Stockport park

A man has been arrested after police were called to reports of gunfire in a Stockport park.

Armed police swooped on Alexandra Park at around 4.30pm on Saturday (May 30).

A man was arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and remains in police custody for questioning.

Police say no one was hurt and that there is no wider threat to the community.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At 16.31 today we received a report of gunshots in an area of Alexandra Park in Stockport.

"We then received a second call suggesting that a male was in possession of a firearm.

"Specialist officers attended and located the male. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

"He remains in police custody for questioning. No one was hurt and there is no wider threat to the community."

People in the park and residents living nearby heard a number of loud bangs.

One witness said: "I heard three gunshots. It was loud enough to be heard by people in the area.

"Police and armed officers showed up at the park looking for the man.

"They said they were looking for someone. They were searching the area near the reservoir.

"There were police dogs in all the reeds and the helicopter was circling above.

"I then saw a man get arrested and put in the back of a police van."

The man remains in police custody for questioning.
