Armed police save toddler suffering a seizure after shocked mum spotted driving erratically

Armed police showed there's more to policing than catching criminals when they saved a two-year-old's life on Saturday afternoon.

Officers intervened when they spotted the youngster's mum driving erratically because she feared her daughter was choking, a GMP inspector said.

They stopped the car, near the Apollo on Hyde Road, Ardwick, before helping the child and her mum into their armed response vehicle.

The girl was then taken straight to A&E where she was treated for a seizure at around 3pm on Saturday.

Insp Tariq Butt from the specialist operations and tactical aid unit tweeted about the heroic actions of his officers later that evening.

At 8pm, tweeted: "Today my Firearms Team saved the life of a two year old girl with proactive policing.

"Stopped a vehicle driving erratically, mother thinks girl is choking, officers get mother and child in the Armed Response Vehicle and take her straight to A&E where she was treated for a seizure."

In another tweet, Insp Butt said the young girl was 'on the mend'.

The tweet received a lot of praise from members of the public.

Maz Smith wrote: "Well done."

While Mike Bate added: "Not all about crime, well done all."

Scott Williams replied: "Your team are heroes Tariq...Well done all."

And Chris added: "Top job - well done to all involved and a swift recovery to the young lady."

Insp Butt said: "Whilst we have firearms officers to provide us with an armed capability should the need arise, they are also police officers first and foremost and are here to help the public of greater Manchester by proactively patrolling and responding non firearms incidents too."
