Armed police rush to street after man, 40, attacked with 'machete'

Armed police have been sent to a residential street in Merseyside following reports that a man had been attacked with a machete.

Specialist firearms officers were sent out to Eaton Street in Prescot at around 10.25am on Sunday following reports that a man had been assaulted.

Police said the man, in his 40s, may have been attacked with a machete in a "targeted" incident.

He suffered injuries to his neck and leg and was taken to hospital, report the LiverpoolEcho.

Forensic, CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing as police look to establish the circumstances and the exact scene of the incident, initially thought to be be in the region of Eaton Street and Hope Street.

A spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to Eaton Street to reports of a man in his 40s having been assaulted, possibly with a machete."

Detective Inspector Steve McGrath said: "For such an incident to have taken place in the daytime on a main road will have been shocking for anyone to witness.

"At this early stage we think it was a targeted and isolated incident, but need to understand precisely what happened and why.

"If you did see or hear anything, or were passing by Eaton Street and Hope Street and have CCTV or dashcam, come forward and we will take positive action to identify those responsible.

Police urge anyone with information to call 101 with reference 20000425103.
