Armed police rush to scene after knifeman threatens people on the street in Birkenhead

Terrified witnesses reported a man threatening people with a knife in the centre of Birkenhead.

At around 5.15pm today (Thursday), calls were received of a man on Cleveland Street, reportedly in possession of a knife and making threats towards members of the public.

Armed police rushed to the scene and detained a man nearby.

A police spokesperson confirmed a 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray; threats to kill; and possession of a bladed article.

He has been taken to a police station for questioning by detectives.
