Armed police race to Byker after reports of a 'man with a handgun'

Armed police raced to Byker amid reports a man had been spotted carrying a handgun.

Over half a dozen cars, with blue lights and sirens, raced over Byker Bridge on Thursday afternoon.

Northumbria Police say officers were called just before 3.50pm following "a report of concern for a man with a suspected handgun" on Wilfred Street, Newcastle.

"Armed officers assisted with initial enquiries however; following an extensive search of the area no one was located," added a force spokesperson.

"Enquiries remain ongoing."

The street is located at the Byker end of the bridge, near the bottom of Shields Road.

It is the location of several businesses, as well as Byker Bridge House, which offers support to homeless and vulnerable people.
