A police spokesman confirmed they were called to to an area near Sainsburys on Saturday afternoon. They said: "Following reports of threats being made in the Thornhill hill area of Cardiff earlier today, a 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a knife.

"Armed police were deployed as a precaution to ensure the safety of colleagues and the public.

"With serious concerns for his safety and that of the general public, a decision was made to discharge Taser in order to subdue the man before his arrest."

The incident was witnessed by a number of shoppers on a day when shelves were stripped bare by panic buying amid the coronavirus pandemic.
