Armed police descend on street in east Manchester after 'reports of man with an axe'

Armed police swarmed a street in east Manchester following reports of a man wielding an axe during a 'disturbance'.

It happened on Ashton Old Road in Openshaw shortly before 2pm on Sunday.

A picture from the scene showed a number of officers, including several armed officers with their weapons drawn, entering a property.

Today Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed they were responding to reports of a man armed with an axe.

"At about 1.55pm on May 2, Police responded to reports of a disturbance on Ashton Old Road in Manchester involving a man with an axe," a force spokesman said.

"A man was arrested at the location.".

No further details have been disclosed.

Motorists said the road was closed for a short time, with traffic then moving slowly afterwards near the scene, close to the border with Tameside.
