Armed police deployed after man chased and shots fired in Burmantofts

Armed police descended on a residential area in Leeds this morning after a man was chased by three others and shots were fired.

Detectives are investigating what happened near Cherry Row, Burmantofts shortly after midnight following reports of three young men chasing another and loud bangs being heard.

Armed officers were deployed to the scene and blank shell cases were recovered.

A scene remains in place to undergo forensic examination and specialist searches and enquiries are ongoing to identify the suspects and the victim.

A witness told LeedsLive there were eight officers at the scene, with a police van blocked access to the road and cars unable to drive through.

Detective Inspector Vicky Alexander, of Leeds District CID, said: “We are carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those involved and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any part of the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation.

“We appreciate an incident such as this will cause concern to residents in the area and we are working closely with our colleagues on the local neighbourhood policing team who will be providing suitable reassurance.”
