Armed police called to Maesycwmmer after reports of man with gun only to find it was for paintballing

Armed police were called to a village on Sunday after concerns a man had a firearm.

But when they got to Maesycwmmer, on the outskirts of Caerphilly , they discovered the 'weapon' was actually one that was used for paintballing.

Officers were called to Main Road just after 3.30pm following reports that there was a man in a vehicle with a firearm.

After making inquiries they discovered a 27-year-old man in possession of an airsoft weapon which is used for paintballing.

Video footage shared on social media appeared to show a man walking out of a property with his arms raised towards a group of armed officers with the road blocked off and several police BMW X5 vehicles with their lights flashing in the vicinity.

At one point another officer appears to lead a dog away from the scene. At least seven armed officers are visible in the footage.

Due to the nature of the call armed police were sent to the location to ensure the safety of the public, a Gwent Police spokesman said.

Chief Inspector Ryan Francis added: "We are satisfied that the call was made in good faith and there was not any threat to the public.

"No arrests were made and the man has been given suitable advice regarding responsible transportation of airsoft weapons."
