Armed police swooped in Tuebrook after reports two men had been seen with guns on the railway line.
Merseyside Police were called to West Derby Road at around 7pm following a unconfirmed sighting of firearms.
And officers stop-checked two men near West Derby Road in Tuebrook a short time later - but no firearms were found.
A force spokesman said: "No firearms were found and the deployment was stood down."
In pictures two police cars could be seen at the scene with officers and armed officers making enquiries outside the Bargain Booze store.
The incident came just hours after a l arge police presence was spotted in Norris Green .
Matrix search teams, armed police and forensic officers arrived at the roundabout for Utting Avenue East and Broadway to carry out a search of the area around the disused railway line known locally as the "Ralla."
After spending several hours at the scene, they seized shotgun and handgun ammunition, which will be forensically recovered for further enquiries.
The find came hot on the heels of two guns and ammunition being recovered in Highgate Street, Edge Hill on Thursday and two guns being found during a stop and search operation in Wavertree on Wednesday evening.
Matrix Inspector Chris Barnes said: "This week has seen several dangerous weapons and pieces of ammunition taken off our streets, and we want the momentum to continue to make your streets safer each and every day.
"Every weapon or ammunition means a criminal or gang with less capability to intimidate, injure and cause damage.
