Armed police block Garforth road after reports of machete-wielding man - but it was a false alarm

Armed police officers descended on a Leeds suburb yesterday amid fears a man was wandering around with a "machete".

Police were spotted yesterday afternoon in Selby Road, Garforth, in the area known as Charlie Sweeps Corner and on social media it was reported that there was a man armed with a blade.

Officers arrived, blocked the road and searched the area after acting upon a call by a resident but ultimately found that there was no one in Garforth carrying a weapon.

Eventually, the call was put down to a false alarm.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Armed police attended in the Garforth area yesterday following a call by a resident reporting seeing a man with a bladed implement.

"Officers searched the area and following enquiries determined no offences had taken place, and logged the matter as a false call made with good intent.
