Armed police swooped on a premises in Sunderland city centre last night after it was reported a man was carrying a firearm.

A man is understood to have had an argument with a group of people at an address on Vine Place and made threats towards them.

Officers were called out at 8.50pm on Thursday night after it was reported that the man was in possession of a weapon.

Armed police attended the premises and were able to identify the man in question.

He was searched and it was established that he was not carrying a weapon.

A 50-year-old man was arrested for a public order offence and was given a caution in relation with the incident.

Northumbria Police has confirmed they are satisfied that no crime had been committed.

"In an emergency, ring 999."
