Armed police and helicopter deployed in Knowle West

Armed police and a helicopter were deployed in a manhunt in south Bristol.

There were several social media reports of a heavy police presence and helicopter overhead in Melvin Square, Knowle West, at about 6pm this evening (March 21).

Several police, including firearms officers, were seen outside the Carpenters Place apartment block in Galway Road and Leinster Avenue while the airborne vehicle reportedly hovered for about an hour.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said a 41-year-old wanted man was arrested in the incident.

When are armed police allowed to fire?

"Police were carrying out the arrest of a 41-year-old man in connection with an affray," he said.

"He is currently in custody. Some armed police attended as a precaution in case the suspect was armed.

"A helicopter also attended in support."

An image from the scene shared on social media appears to show a man handcuffed against a police car outside the block of flats in Galway Road while several children watch on.
