Armed gardai called to Irish town as man rushed to hospital after serious assault

Two men have been arrested after a man in his 30s was assaulted in Co Kildare.

The incident happened in the Newbridge area on Tuesday morning.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene at around 12.30am on Eyre Street in the town.

The man was found at the scene with a "laceration to his jaw and neck".

He was treated by ambulance personnel and rushed to Tallaght Hospital.

His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

And in a follow-up operation, officers from the Garda Armed Support Unit joined local gardai and arrested two men aged in their 20s and 30s at an apartment in Power's Court in the town a short time later.

Gardai are also now appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

A garda spokesman said: "The apartment has been declared a crime scene and is currently preserved for forensic examination. Both men were taken to Newbridge Garda Station where they are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. They can be held for up to twenty four hours.

"Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newbridge Garda Station (045) 431 212 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."
