Armed Gardaí swarm around driver following car chase through Mayo villages

Gardaí swarmed around a silver Volkswagen Passat after it absconded a checkpoint, leading officers on a wild goose chase through several Mayo villages.

The high-speed incident occurred on Sunday, February 12, when at around 1:30 pm the driver sped past gardai on the N84 toward Ballinrobe.

The vehicle went on to be involved in a “series of incidents as it travelled through the areas of Ballinrobe, Partry, Ballintubber, Clogher, Frenchill, Breaffy, and Castlebar”.

A garda spokesperson told Galway Beo that the vehicle was eventually involved in a collision at Cottage Road in Breaffy. This led to the arrest of three men - one aged in his 20s and two aged in their 30s - at the scene.

They were all taken to Garda Stations in the West of Ireland as Gardaí launch an investigation into the incident and appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The garda spokesman explained: "On Sunday, 12th February 2023, at approximately 1:30pm, a silver coloured Volkswagen Passat estate travelling on the N84 towards Ballinrobe failed to stop for Gardaí and was subsequently involved in a series of incidents as it travelled through the areas of Ballinrobe, Partry, Ballintubber, Clogher, Frenchill, Breaffy and Castlebar.

“The vehicle was involved in a collision at Cottage Road in Breaffy and three males, one aged in his 20s and two aged in their 30s, were arrested at the scene and taken to Garda Stations in the Western Region."

He added: "Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Gardaí in Mayo are appealing to any person who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

“Anyone who was travelling on foot or by vehicle in these areas between 1:00pm and 2:30pm, who may have witnessed or have footage (including dash cam) of the silver Volkswagen Passat car involved in this incident, is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí”.

Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 0949038200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800666111 or any Garda Station.
