Armed gardai rush to Kildare Village shopping mall after 'hoax' online threat of shooting

Armed gardai rushed to Kildare Village on Sunday evening after a "hoax" online shooting threat was made against shoppers in the popular outlet.

Gardai attended the centre on Sunday evening after a shady account posted a picture of a knife, claimed to have a gun, and vowed to shoot as many people as they could.

Authorities took no chances and an assessment of the area was immediately carried out.

The outlet was quickly deemed to be safe and the emergency response unit remained patrolling the area until 8pm, Dublin Live reports.

A spokesman told the Irish Mirror: "On the 2/2/2020 at approximately 4pm a number of Garda units attended at a Shopping Outlet in Kildare following a security alert.

"After an initial threat assessment, Gardaí determined that there was no danger to the public and no evacuation was necessary.

"The matter has since been deemed a hoax. For operational reasons no further information is available."

Superintendent Martin Walker assured the public telling KFM that there was no risk and the decision to keep armed gardai at the scene was only precautionary.
