Armed gardai rush to Galway student accommodation after reports of person with a gun

Armed gardai rushed to student accommodation in Galway this afternoon after reports of someone with a gun.

Local gardai received a call about a firearm in a property in the Upper Newcastle area and responded immediately.

Multiple garda units including armed gardai arrived at the accommodation and conducted searches.

After an extensive search, no weapon was found and gardai left the scene.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí responded to a report of a possible firearm at a property in Upper Newcastle, Galway this afternoon, Friday 2nd October 2020.

"The Armed Support Unit attended the scene and conducted a thorough search of the premises. The search proved negative."
