Armed gardai rushed to a supermarket in Cork City's northside after a huge misunderstanding last week.

An onlooker phoned the gardai after spotting someone near the roof of Dunnes Stores in Ballyvolane with what they thought was a gun.

Multiple units of the armed garda unit rushed to the scene but soon realised it was a false alarm.

The person spotted with the suspected firearm is believed to have been instead holding a power hose and carrying out maintenance.

The incident, which happened last Tuesday afternoon, was stood down quickly after the realisation was made.

Gardai confirmed to the Irish Mirror they were called to the area but it was a false alarm.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí were alerted to an alleged firearm incident at a business premises in Ballyvolane, Co. Cork on Tuesday, 20 th October 2020 at approximately 4.30pm.

"A number of Garda units were dispatched to the scene. On arrival, it transpired this was a false alarm and there was no firearm present."
