Armed gardai rush to Dublin Airport as man threatens to 'shoot up' the place

Armed gardai rushed to Dublin Airport after a man threatened to ‘shoot up’ the place, it has emerged.

The man, who is in his 40s, is understood to have threatened to be armed with a firearm in the middle of Terminal One shortly before 1pm yesterday.

Sources say the man was frustrated having allegedly missed a flight and claimed to airport staff that he was armed and would shoot up the place.

The incident caused airport staff to immediately contact Gardai - with the Garda Armed Support Unit and the Emergency Response Unit being rushed to the scene.

It is understood however that an unarmed member of An Garda Siobhana managed to apprehend the man first - after being alerted by airport police.

The man was searched, and it emerged that he was in fact unarmed.

It is understood that gardai had mental health concerns in relation to this incident.

Gardai escorted the man to Ballymun Garda Station, where he was questioned in relation to the incident.

He was subsequently charged and is due to appear before the Criminal Court of Justice in connection with the incident this morning.

"The man was taken to Ballymun Garda Station where he is currently detained. He will now appear before a sitting of the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin tomorrow, 14th June 2021, at 10.30am.

"No injuries were reported."

A spokesperson for Dublin Airport declined to comment on the incident and referred the Mirror to An Garda Siochana.
