Armed gardai are patrolling Longford town on a daily basis due to an outbreak of violence between feuding families.
Up to five families are believed to be invovled.
A shocking 43 incidents of violence, criminal damage and arson have occurred in the last ten weeks in the districts of Longford town and Granard.
These included four stabbings, two arson attacks and a number of incidents in which individuals were seriously injured.
Superintendent Jim Daly said the armed patrols were set up in response to the incidents, RTE reports.
He added that all members of the feuding families had refused to participate in mediation efforts.
Local councillor Seamus Butler, Chairman of the Longford Town Municipal Area, said gardaí had to confront those who were responsible for the violent incidents.
He is also calling on gardaí to bring in the Criminal Assets Bureau to further investigate the matter.
