Armed forces day marked with flag flying at North Lanarkshire headquarters

North Lanarkshire is marking this weekend’s armed forces day by flying the flag for those giving their service.

Airdrie North councillor David Cullen joined provost Jean Jones and council chief executive Des Murray to raise the flag at the authority’s Civic Centre headquarters in Motherwell.

Planned events for national armed forces day this Saturday have been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, but the council is still marking the occasion by flying the flag throughout this week.

Armed forces champion Councillor Cullen, who himself served in the army, said: “Armed forces day gives us the chance to show our appreciation for the selfless sacrifice and dedication given to our country by our services both past and present.

“No better example has been their support during the current pandemic, which has seen service personnel running testing centres, supporting NHS logistics and building contingency hospitals such as the Nightingale and Louisa Jordan facilities.

“As a council, we will continue to develop initiatives across Lanarkshire to show our appreciation in a practical sense.”

The annual armed forces day is an “opportunity to recognise the contribution made on behalf of the nation by the men and women currently serving as troops, veterans and cadets”.

Provost Jones said: “We’re delighted to take part in the annual week-long celebration – during the coronavirus outbreak, they have provided much-needed support during a time of national crisis.

“They provide safety and security, and we’re proud to acknowledge their vital contribution and show our support for the sacrifices they continue to make for their country.”
