'Armed cops' rush to street before man arrested following reports of people being 'threatened with an axe'

A man has been arrested after reports of people being 'threatened with an axe'.

Police were called to a property on Spindlewood Road, Ince, Wigan at around 5pm on Sunday (June 7).

A man was reported to have been using the weapon to threaten people inside the house.

Witnesses said they saw armed police rush to the residential street.

A helicopter was spotted circling overhead.

Officers, with the help of the dog unit, eventually found a man in nearby woodland.

An axe was also recovered.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray; and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was taken to hospital having suffered a 'minor' injury. Police say no one else was hurt.

Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

A Greater Manchester Police statement read: "Police were called to a property on Spindlewood Road, Ince, Wigan at around 5pm on Sunday 7 June 2020 to a report of a man threatening the occupants of a house with an axe.

"Specialist officers, including officers from the dog unit, attended and located a man in a nearby woodland.

"An axe was recovered nearby.

"A man aged 44 was detained at the scene on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon. He was taken to hospital for treatment of a minor injury.

"No further injuries were reported.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
