Armando Manzanero dead: Legendary Mexican singer dies at 85 after Covid fight in hospital

Mexican singer and composer Armando Manzanero has passed away following a battle with Covid.

The award wining music star was aged 85 when he passed away on Monday after spending almost two weeks in hospital.

Mexican newspaper El Universal reported that the singer had suffered a heart attack while being treated at a hospital in Mexico City.

Armando's manager, Laura Blum, has reportedly stated the singer's death was caused by complications from a kidney problem.

Armando was diagnosed with coronavirus on December 17 and hospitalised on December 23 when his condition worsened.

Reports stated he had been placed on a ventilator as he struggled to breathe.

On Sunday, the singer's family released a statement stating his lungs were "already fine and the oxygen level is at a minimum."

However, they added tha he was still connected to a respirator due to his kidneys and stating he required dialysis during a period of 72 hours."

Armando enjoyed a music career over seven decades.

His biggest hit, Somos Novios, was translated into English and performed by Perry Como in the 1970s tune It's Impossible.

He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and was behind tracks for other huge stars including Andrea Bocelli, Celia Cruz, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has led tributes to the star, branding him: "a great composer, and the country's best."

President Obrador commanded Armando, stating: "Besides that, he was a man with sensitivity, on social questions as well."

Manzanero was born in Merida, the capital of Yucatan state, and it has been reported that his ashes will be buried there following his funeral.

The star leaves behind multiple ex-wives, seven children and 16 grandchildren.
