Armagh's Tiernan Kelly accepts six-month ban for alleged eye gouge

Armagh's Tiernan Kelly has accepted a six-month ban for an alleged eye gouge on Galway's Damien Comer in last weekend's All-Ireland quarter-final.

The GAA's CCCC meted out punishments on Thursday night over the brawl, which broke out ahead of extra-time at Croke Park.

A six-month suspension was proposed for Kelly, who is currently injured and was not part of Armagh's official squad last Sunday.

After accepting the ban, Kelly will now not be able to play for his club Clann Eireann GAC for the rest of the year.

But he will not miss any inter-county games through suspension and could return to Armagh's squad for their pre-season games next January.

As well as Kelly's ban, Galway captain Sean Kelly and Armagh's joint-captain have been proposed for one-match bans, but the Tribesmen have challenged Kelly's ban and will hope he can play in their semi-final clash with Derry.

Armagh's Greg McCabe has also been given a one-match ban for his red card for a high challenge, but it has been doubled to two because he was banned for a similar offence already this year.

Armagh confirmed in a statement on Friday that they had accepted the bans.

It read: “Following the investigation carried out by the CCCC, Armagh GAA can confirm the players and county board have accepted the proposed penalties. There will be no further comment."

It is understood that both counties have also received €10,000 fines.
