Armagh man pleads not guilty to murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe during credit union robbery

An Armagh man pleaded not guilty to the capital murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe when he was arraigned at the Central Criminal Court this morning.

Aaron Brady, 27, from New Road, Crossmaglen also pleaded not guilty to the robbery of €7,000 in cash and cheques from Mr Pat Bellew at Lordship Credit Union at Bellurgan, Co Louth on January 25, 2013.

The accused, wearing a blue suit, answered "not guilty" when the charges were put to him.

Because the trial is expected to last 16 weeks, an enlarged jury of 15 members is being selected.

At the end of the trial 12 members of the 15-strong jury who will hear the case, will be drawn by ballot  and withdraw to consider the verdict.

Prospective jurors were also told by Judge White that the alleged offences centred on events in the Carlingford peninsula, South Armagh and Co Louth, including Dundalk.

They were also told that the alleged offences were subject to extensive media coverage.

If they believed this would affect their impartiality as jurors they must also seek to excuse themselves from the case, the judge said.

The jury was also told to stay away from social media and the internet for the duration of the trial.

Aaron Brady will go on trial tomorrow morning January 28, in front of a jury of six men and nine women.
