Armagh facing added restrictions amid “alarming spike” in Covid-19 cases

Large parts of Armagh are expected to be subjected to extra Covid restrictions amid an “alarming spike” in cases, it is understood.

Sources have indicated that the BT60 postcode is to be added to the list of areas subject to extra regulations and guidance.

The move comes after Belfast and Ballymena were revealed as the first parts of Northern Ireland to face a ‘localised lockdown’.

Details of the measures are expected to be announced later today after the Stormont Executive finishes its meeting.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon council area has the second highest number of positive cases in Northern Ireland, according to the Department of Health dashboard, with 1,090 positives.

Only Belfast has more with 2,205. With 787 cases each, Lisburn and Castlereagh and Mid and East Antrim are joint third.

Restrictions in Belfast and Ballymena have applied mainly to social gatherings with people warned about too many people visiting homes.
