Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon council bins issue raised after collections missed

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s head of environmental services has confirmed an issue at a waste collection depot was the reason residents in Armagh did not have their bins lifted as normal.

The service, operated by Bryson Recycling, ran into problems on Monday, September 7, meaning many residents did not have their waste collected as expected.

As Council’s first environmental services committee meeting in almost six months began the committee’s chair, Councillor Darryn Causby raised the issue.

“There appears to have been an issue with waste collection in Armagh and I have been asked to raise it by more than one councillor,” said Cllr Causby.

He asked for a brief report from Council’s head of environmental services Barry Patience and told members they would receive further information on Tuesday.

“We were informed at 10am this morning (Monday) that there was an issue in the depot in Armagh that meant only one of the crews - five crews are sent out on a normal day - were able to get out,” said Mr Patience.

“We got the information from central headquarters and once we got clarity, we got the message out to the public, as did Bryson Recycling.”

Mr Patience also claimed there was some confusion around waste collection in the Keady area.

“There was also some confusion about Keady,” said Mr Patience.

“We were told it all had been done but apparently that is not the case but we will keep members updated.”

When asked for an update on the situation a spokesperson for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council said it was a matter for Bryson Recycling to comment on.

A spokesperson for Bryson Recycling told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that not all collections were completed in Keady but said alternative arrangements are now in place to ensure every household will have its waste collected.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances our kerbside collection service did not operate in the Armagh on Monday, September 7th,” said the spokesperson.

“Some collections were made in Keady but the collection round was not completed so all households did not receive a collection.

“An alternative collection will take place on Saturday, September 12, for all residents who missed their collection on Monday.

“Please leave your boxes out for collection by 7am on Saturday morning.

“All our collection crews are out in Armagh today (Tuesday, September 8) and collections will take place as normal.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
