Armadale Devils ace Gregor Millar says he’s ‘delighted’ to finally get going as they begin their National Development League campaign on Saturday away at Berwick.
The Devils made their return to the sport last year after a hiatus of more than a decade - only to see their season cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
It’s been a long wait for the 17-year-old from Falkirk but the youngster is desperate to make up for lost time as the Devils travel south to take on the Berwick Bullets.
They then host the same opponents in their first home fixture of the season on Friday, May 7.
Millar, who has older brother Lewis as a team-mate this season, can’t wait to get on track.
Speaking to the Courier, the teenager said: “I’m delighted the season is here. I’m really happy to finally get the chance to race and see what it’s all about at this level.
“It’s the highest standard of racing that I’ve ever been involved at so I’m looking forward to testing myself and pushing myself to learn and get better with every race.
“I’ve raced at Armadale Stadium for a few years and used to do second half meetings after the Monarchs. It’s a difficult track but I’ve got some experience and will be aiming to improve the more I race on it.
“I want to race as much as possible, that’s really just the aim. I’m not going into the season with targets or expectations. I’m almost really treating it as a learning year.”
Millar is keen to embrace all the new experiences that the NDL campaign will throw up - even the travelling.
The Devils are the only Scottish side in the eight-team league with away days in Berwick, Eastbourne, Leicester, Manchester, Mildenhall, Newcastle, and Sittingbourne throughout the season.
He added: “There will be a lot of travelling, going up and down the country to fixtures, but that’s part of the fun and part of the experience. It’s something to look forward to and something to learn how to manage and deal with.”
While the NDL is currently the highest level he’s raced at, the life-long Monarchs fan has his eyes on climbing the ladder and one day donning the blue and gold, although he’s fully focused on the task at hand.
He said: “The dream would be to ride for the Monarchs. That’s my ultimate goal in the sport, but I’m not looking too far ahead.
“I want to have a good season with the Devils and score regular points. I’ll be happy if at the end of the season I feel like I’ve taken steps forward as a rider.”
