CHICAGO _ White Sox left-handed starter Carlos Rodon will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his pitching arm, the team announced Monday.
Rodon will meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
"Given that he has yet to undergo the surgery, it's still too early to give you a precise timeline in terms of his potential return," Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. "However, given the timing of the surgery it is reasonable to expect Carlos to be able to rejoin us during the second half of the 2020 season."
Rodon last pitched on May 1, an outing that lasting 3 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old finishes the season 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA and 40 strikeouts.
"I think he is at peace with it in terms of the road ahead of him," Hahn said. "He knows it's not going to be, necessarily, an easy rehab, but at the same time, it's one that has a very, very high likelihood of success and one that should put him in a position to continue on and have a very, very promising career once he returns."
In more bad news for the Sox, the team announced that reliever Nate Jones had flexor mass surgery Monday; the right-hander will be out for the season as well.
Jones, 33, had not pitched since April 26 and finished with a 3.48 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.
"There's been a decent number of very fine relievers in the last several years who have had this and been able to be productive into their mid, late 30s," Hahn said. "Certainly there's no reason to think Nate can't be one as well. Get this behind him, get him healthy and see where it goes."
