Arlene Phillips 'turned down' Strictly three times before eventually joining show

Arlene Phillips has confessed that she turned down her role on Strictly Come Dancing three times before eventually being persuaded to join the show.

The choreographer, 78, was a mainstay on the show alongside Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli from 2004 to 2009 when she was replaced by Alesha Dixon.

But she admits that the pilot for the show "felt like chaos" and she was only persuaded to do it by Len.

She told Celebrity Search Engine podcast host Abbie McCarthy: "I said no three times. So I went to do this pilot, and Len Goodman was there, there was another kind of judge stand-in person, and there were some of the dancers we know, Anton was there, Brendan was there… it felt like chaos!

"Then Len turned to me and he said, 'I don't know about this, are you going to do it?', and I said, 'I don't know, are you?' and he said, 'I'll do it if you do it!'. And then we both agreed to do it!"

And it appears she feels like she made the right decision in the end.

She continued: "It was one of the most exciting things I've done in my life!"

The original line-up has been rejigged many times since Arlene last appeared.

Her replacement Alesha quit the hit BBC show in 2011 to take up a role as a judge on Britain's Got Talent. She was replaced by Darcey Bussell.

The retired ballerina has also since left the show and was replaced by Oti Mabuse in 2018.

Original head judge Len took a step back from his duties in 2016 after 14 series. Shirley Ballas took his place.

Two judges have stood the test of time though with Bruno and Craig appearing in every series since it first aired. Travel restrictions meant that Bruno could only take part in the last series via video link. He was not replaced in person on the panel.

The rumour mill is once again in full flow with who is going to appear in the latest series.

So far, the likes of the country's chief medical advisor Chris Whitty and Line of Duty's Gregory Piper have been reported targets for the show.

Elsewhere, Good Morning Britain's Alex Beresford and Laura Tobin have both been credited with being possible contestants.
