Arlene Foster confirms changes to number of people you can meet outdoors at Northern Ireland coronavirus briefing

The Northern Ireland Executive has announced a small relaxation of some coronavirus measures.

From March 8, outdoor gatherings can be increased, allowing for more people to meet in public places.

On Thursday, First Minister Arlene Foster said from this date, 10 people from two households will be allowed to meet in a public park or space.

Mrs Foster confirmed that Northern Ireland lockdown will be extended until April 1 with a full review on March 18.

She said: “Our clear priority is to keep the R number to below 1.”

The First Minister added that a full lifting of the lockdown was “not possible at this time”.

But on outdoor gatherings, Arlene Foster explained the changes.

She said: "We have agreed that from Monday March 8, we're increasing the amount of people who can meet outdoors. Up to 10 people from no more than two households will be able to meet in a park or public space.

"We are now at a time for patience and persistence. We must dig in and secure the position we hold and then to slowly move forward.

"We want to be able to reopen all of society and we will do that with your help.

"On March 1, we will publish the decision making framework for our pathway to recovery and we have begun that journey. We are on our way. We don't not want to step back again into a lockdown."

It was also confirmed that primary school pupils in year groups P1 to P3 will return to face-to-face learning on March 8.

On March 22, secondary pupils in key exam years - year groups 12 to 14 – will return to school.

Primary 1-3 pupils will revert to remote learning for a week on that date to minimise the impact on infection rates of years 12-14 returning.

Ms Foster added that key workers’ children will continue to attend school as they have done through lockdown.
