Arkansas’ atrocious fake punt attempt vs. Auburn ends in disaster

Arkansas tried to get tricky in its attempt to upset No. 11 Auburn on Saturday, and it was disastrous — in addition to just being an absolutely terrible idea in the first place.

On 4th-and-11 from the Razorbacks’ own 41-yard line, they decided to punt. Good call when you’re already down 17-0 early in the second quarter, right? Except that’s not what happened.

Junior punter Sam Loy got the ball, and instead of punting it, he attempted a half-hearted chest pass over his protection that was easily intercepted by Auburn linebacker Chandler Wooten and returned two yards to Arkansas’ 37. While the execution here was obviously not great, the vast majority of the blame goes to whoever concocted this ridiculously awful fake punt.

And that’s how you throw an interception on a punt.

This is, by far, the worst trick play we’ve seen through the first half of the college football season – maybe ever? — and it seems impossible to top. Seriously, Arkansas, what were you thinking? And against a team like Auburn?

Luckily for the Razorbacks, the Tigers ended up missing a field goal on their subsequent drive. But this play remains unforgettable, and college football fans couldn’t believe what they witnessed.
