Arkane’s ‘Redfall’ Leaks Suggest It’s Going To Be A Borderlands-Like Looter
One of the surprises at Xbox’s last showcase was a new game from Arkane called Redfall, which debuted a cinematic trailer, and had players hunting down vampires.
What was not clear was what type of game it was, exactly, and no real information about it has been forthcoming. A new leak, however, seems to have shed some light on the type of game it’s going to be, and it may be falling somewhere in the looter genre, meant to compete with a game like Borderlands with different character classes, an open world and loot drops.
A number of in-development screenshots have leaked from Redfall. I’m not going to post them here, as I’m pretttty sure they’re stolen and subject to takedowns, but they can still be seen at WindowsCentral here for now.
They look…bad. And yet I’m really not going to hold that against them at all, given that they seem very old and very in development and I would not expect them to look polished at that point. Supposedly this project was in the works even before Microsoft acquired Bethesda, and I don’t think we can draw conclusions about its ultimate visual quality with these ultra-early screenshots.
But what we can draw from these leaks? The type of game that this is going to be, perhaps, as a description of the game has emerged from all this.
- Gameplay and the loot/leveling/adventuring loop is being described as similar to Borderlands with an open world, albeit one with no loading screens. The map is supposed to be the size of something like Fallout 76 or Ghost of Tsushima.
- It’s solo or co-op with six playable characters that have at least one unique hero ability.
- Stealth is an option in gameplay, or you can go guns blazing. Enemies include both humans and vampires, and there are Borderlands-like major boss fights.
- The screenshots show “rarity” loot with special abilities, again, tying back to a game like Borderlands and indicating a heavy loot focus for the game in general.
I think that many were assuming that Redfall would be closer to a Left 4 Dead style game where players survive hordes of encroaching vampires rather than zombies. The trailer really didn’t make it clear what genre this was in, but it seems to be open world and loot-heavy, though we don’t know if they’re going to be full “live service” or anything like that. Glimpses of screenshots did appear to show some sort of microtransaction store, something Borderlands has mostly avoided.
Given that “looter shooter” is my main genre of choice, I’m certainly excited for a vampire hunting game in this format from a developer like Arkane. Even though these leaked screenshots look rough, I’m sure the final product will be polished, and I’m really looking forward to hearing more about it. Officially, next time.
