Arjen Robben plans comeback from retirement with move to former club Groningen

Arjen Robben has announced his intention to return to playing in 2020/21, with former club FC Groningen.

The Dutch legend opted to end his playing career, initially at least, at the end of 18/19 after 10 trophy-laden seasons with Bayern Munich.

But there had already been rumours of the winger returning to action earlier this season, with Brazilian team Botafogo said to be interested in luring him back into the game.

Now, though, he has agreed to plan a return with his first club, Groningen, who he played two years with before moves to PSV, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern.

In an announcement on social media, Robben stated he would be making it his “mission” to join the team for pre-season training—though it’s not yet a done deal.

The 36-year-old said that it was not yet certain the move would go ahead, but that his “drive and motivation will be at 100 per cent” for the “tough physical challenge” of a return.

Groningen ended the 2019-20 Eredivisie season in ninth place.
