Arizona high school golfer wins scholarship backed by NBA star

Cleveland Cavaliers center Andre Drummond revealed his special late Christmas gift to Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor High School junior girls golfer Sydney-Reese Harris on Jan. 6.

The two-time NBA All-Star Drummond posted a video on Instagram and TikTok that Harris is the second recipient of a $5,000-dollar college scholarship, courtesy of the partnership between high school sports social media company SportsHi and himself.

SportsHi is a social media app dedicated to supporting high school athletes’ collegiate ambitions.

Harris was selected out of 2,000 applicants for the scholarship.

“Sydney-Reese exemplifies the type of student-athlete we want to support. As an African-American female playing golf, there are multiple barriers she is overcoming and if we can play a small role in her journey, that’s exactly the reason why we started SportsHi,” SportsHi Chief Executive Officer and founder Alexander Miles said in a release.

“Participation in sports increases a high school student’s likelihood of continuing their education, and with this in mind, SportsHi is committed to identifying and rewarding students who wish to attend college, but may not have the necessary means to do so.”

Harris individually placed 40th in the 2020 AIA Division I state championship for Sandra Day O’Connor.

She ranked 45th among all of the division’s players in producing a 40.7 stroke average during the season.

“This scholarship has sparked a huge fire inside of me to push myself harder to be more ambitious and successful,” Harris said. “Winning this scholarship gives me a greater confidence to overcome my doubts , and achieve success in college and life.”
