Daniel Finkelstein of the Times has launched an online petition to get Ringo Starr a knighthood. I say "launch", but his efforts to get it placed on the new petitions section of the Downing Street website have, to date, proved futile, five days after he posted it. Maybe they won't allow it: apparently calls for honours have been rejected as unsuitable for the No 10 site, which refers them instead to www.honours.gov.uk. Still, fair play to him for pointing up one of several anomalies in the celebrity honours system.
