Arijit Singh Announces Retirement from Playback Singing, Explains His Reasons

In his note, Arijit wrote, “Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”

Following the announcement, posts from his private X (formerly Twitter) account have surfaced online, shedding light on his reasons for stepping back. Arijit revealed that his decision stemmed from multiple factors and that he had been contemplating it for a long time. He explained, “Finally, I have gathered the right courage. One of the reasons was simple, I get bored pretty quick, that's why I keep changing arrangements of the same songs and perform them on stage. So here is the thing: I got bored. I need to do some other music to live.”

The singer also highlighted his desire to make space for emerging talent, adding, “Another reason is I am excited to hear some singer come up and give me real motivation.”

While stepping away from playback singing, Arijit clarified that he is not retiring from music entirely. Instead, he plans to explore new avenues, particularly returning to Indian classical music, and will continue creating his own compositions.

The announcement came shortly after the release of his song “Maatrubhumi” from Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, which is slated for an April 17 release. The song received attention not only for Arijit’s soulful vocals but also for his collaboration with Salman Khan.

Arijit Singh’s Legacy in Playback Singing

Over the years, Arijit Singh has been celebrated for his emotional depth, modern romantic sound, and versatility, blending classical elements with contemporary pop seamlessly. His decision to step back marks the end of an era in Bollywood music, while also opening the door for new talent to shine.
