Ariel Winter: Kim Kardashian-West's naked selfie promotes body positivity

The one thing Kim Kardashian-West’s naked selfie did establish was just how divisive one image can be.

Her nude drew criticism from some corners and praise from others who felt the photo was an unapologetic celebration of female sexuality, something she herself echoed in an essay on her agency and sexuality and with the hashtag accompanying a second naked picture, #liberated.

Two weeks on, the picture is still drawing headlines as murals spring up, are defaced and replaced, and councils order their removal (although murals of Kanye West locked in a passionate embrace with himself are ok to stay).

The headlines also ensure people are still talking about it, including Ariel Winter, who told the Australian radio show Kyle and Jackie O Kardashian-West's selfie promotes body positivity. “You know, young girls being able to express that they don't have a stick-thin body – they're curvy,” said the Modern Family actress. “Stick-thin bodies are amazing, you know, those girls are amazing too but I think that everybody's body would be celebrated no matter what it is and I think that it's great that she's so comfortable with herself and that she's able to post out there what she wants to and post and if she wants to post a nude selfie, she can.”

Winter and Emily Ratajkowski were just two of a number of people to publically support Kardashian, who responded by sending flowers and notes to both on the power fostered by women supporting each other.
