Ariarne Titmus, Emma McKeon arrive in Darwin on charter flight from Tokyo Olympics

Australian Olympic athletes arrive in Darwin

More than 100 Australian Olympic Team members have touched down in Darwin this morning on a special charter flight after competing in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

On Monday, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said 115 athletes and support staff were scheduled to arrive at Darwin International Airport this morning on a Qantas chartered flight.

The plane touched down at 5:20am.

They will be bussed to the Howard Springs quarantine facility in Darwin, where they will undertake 14 days of mandatory supervised quarantine.

An AOC spokesperson said among the arrivals would be members of the Australian swimming team, including gold medalists Ariarne Titmus and Emma McKeon.

Hours before departing Japan, Titmus took to social media to say she was grateful for the opportunity to compete in her first Olympic Games.

Other returning athletes on board the flight include Australia's women's rugby sevens team, boxers, cyclists and athletics team members.

Due to COVID-19 rules at the Games, athletes are required to leave the Olympic Village within 48 hours of their last event.

More than 850 athletes and support staff are due to return to Australia on commercial and Qantas chartered flights from Japan.

AOC chief executive Matt Carroll said the returning team members would not be taking arrival capacity away from Australians stranded overseas.

"While the team is vaccinated and have been tested every day while at the Games, like every returning Australian, they will remain in quarantine for 14 days and will undergo regular testing."

The AOC's Olympian services manager Daniel Kowalski said athletes and support staff would have access to mental health support while in quarantine.

An activity program has also been set up to keep athletes occupied during quarantine, including virtual live musical performances and online trivia nights.

Members of the Olyroos, the men's rugby sevens and the Australian rowing team are currently in hotel quarantine after arriving in Sydney on commercial flights on Sunday and last Friday.
