Ariana Grande has revealed she wrote different versions of her hit song “thank u, next” to reflect the fluctuations of her love life.
The singer gave more insight into the writing process that resulted in the 2018 tune in an interview with the Zach Sang Show.
In “thank u, next”, Grande famously refers directly to several of her exes, including her ex-fiancé Davidson. The two called off their engagement in October 2018, the month before “thank u, next” was released.
Grande revealed she had “like three different versions of the song” prior to its début – including one without any names.
While she didn't name Davidson, she described a past relationship that could have led to a wedding, in what appears to be a reference to her love story with the comedian.
“In my relationship at the time, things were like up and down and on and off, and so I didn’t know what was going to happen and then we got back together. So I had to make a different version of it, and then we broke up again, so we ended up going with that verse,” the singer added.
“There’s a version where I was getting married, there’s a version where I’m not getting married, there’s a version with nothing. We’re not talking about anything, but we all knew that the first version was gonna be the version we ultimately went with.”
